For Hilldale High School freshman Makynzie Hutcheson, success is about more than what happens in competition. The lessons she has picked up through athletics, academics and the people around her have helped shape the way she approaches challenges and treats others.
Hutcheson competes in softball, track and powerlifting, balancing three sports while placing an emphasis on her work in the classroom. One of her proudest accomplishments came before entering high school, when she maintained all A’s throughout middle school.
That commitment carries into athletics, where Hutcheson has learned that how an athlete responds to a situation can be just as important as the result.
“Body language matters!” Hutcheson said.
It is a simple lesson, but one that fits the way she tries to approach both competition and everyday life. Hutcheson also credits Mrs. Davis with making an impact beyond academics.
“She has taught me to be a better person,” Hutcheson said.
Her experiences with teammates have been another important part of her athletic journey. Hutcheson pointed to Nahla as someone she connected with particularly well.
“We both just worked really good together,” she said.
The relationships Hutcheson has built extend beyond athletics. She also has fond memories of time spent at local BBQ favorite, Maylon’s, particularly because of the people she has gotten to know there.
“Kenny is very nice, and I have made a lot memories there,” Hutcheson said.
The biggest influence in Hutcheson’s life, however, has been her dad. She credits him with teaching her many of the lessons she carries with her, including one piece of advice that has stuck.
“You have to look farther then what’s in front of you,” Hutcheson said of advice from her dad.
That perspective encourages her to think beyond what is immediately in front of her and consider what may be ahead. His influence also shows in the way Hutcheson tries to treat the people around her.
“I always help out when someone asks,” she said.
As Hutcheson begins her high school journey, she brings with her the foundation built through family, school and sports. Above all, she credits her dad for helping shape who she is.
“I’ve always looked up to him, and he’s taught me almost everything I know,” Hutcheson said.
