Scoring his first varsity touchdown gave Kristopher Gonzalez a moment to remember. What made it even better for the Hilldale High School senior was knowing his best friend helped make it happen.
“My most proud moment is getting my first touchdown in a varsity game with my best friend Ty Gaither lead blocking for me,” Gonzalez said.
The touchdown stands out among Gonzalez’s memories on the football field, but the sport has given him more than highlights. Through practices, games and the work that comes with competing, he has learned how to handle difficult moments and keep working toward what he wants.
“Football has taught me patience, how to stay calm under pressure and how to work hard for something,” he said.
Gonzalez has carried that work ethic across multiple sports at Hilldale, competing in football, basketball and soccer. The experiences have helped shape a mindset centered on effort and understanding that worthwhile goals often require sacrifice.
“If you want something bad enough you better be willing to work hard and make sacrifices for it,” Gonzalez said.
His teammates have helped reinforce that mentality. Gonzalez pointed to Talon Shaffer as someone who has consistently encouraged him to put in extra work, including on days when he might not have wanted to.
“Talon Shaffer because he has pushed me to go get some extra work with me when I didn’t want to and has always been there for me,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez also appreciates those who have invested in him away from athletics. In the classroom, Spanish teacher Mrs. Ponce made an impression through the patience she showed while helping him learn.
“She was really patient with me and made sure I learned what she was teaching,” he said.
Outside school and sports, Gonzalez enjoys spending time at the pickleball courts in Muskogee, where he said he has the most fun and spends much of his free time. He is typically involved in Teens for Christ and plans to participate in National Honor Society this year.
As Gonzalez moves through his senior year, the people who have pushed him continue to be an important part of his story. He is especially grateful for those who would not let him walk away when things became difficult.
“I would really like to thank my dad and all my coaches for never letting me quit and pushing me to my best ability,” Gonzalez said.
