Winning the Sooner Classic as a younger athlete remains one of Isaiah Linker’s proudest memories. The Hilldale senior, however, has learned that sports are defined just as much by difficult moments and how he chooses to meet them. That lesson reaches well beyond the field.
“Sports have taught me that not everything is going to be easy,” Linker said. “Tough times are part of life, whether things are going well or not.”
Football and basketball give Linker a place to practice that lesson. Working through difficult moments has prepared him for challenges beyond competition, and one piece of advice shapes his outlook: “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.”
The message has taught Linker to slow down and consider both his response and what it might affect afterward.
People have mattered just as much as the games. Linker credits his parents with giving him the opportunity to participate in athletics and form friendships he otherwise may never have known. Teammate Mitchell White has also left a mark through consistent encouragement.
“He never fails to tell me that he loves me and that God loves me,” Linker said. “His encouragement means a lot to me.”
At school, Linker named Coach JMAC his favorite teacher because he enjoyed the class and valued being around him. He volunteers in the football concession stand and runs chains for junior varsity and ninth-grade games.
Away from school and sports, he enjoys going to the movie theater for a good film and popcorn. Yet his strongest connections remain rooted in athletics: parents who made participation possible, coaches who made school enjoyable and friends whose support reaches well beyond a scoreboard.
For Linker, every challenge brings a choice. What happens next begins with how he chooses to respond each time.
