Hilldale senior Talon Shaffer has spent much of his football career preparing for moments that demand calm under pressure. As the Hornets’ quarterback, every play begins with a decision, and every decision carries the responsibility of leading an entire offense. After gaining varsity experience as a freshman and growing into one of Hilldale’s leaders, Shaffer enters his senior season with a perspective shaped by faith, hard work and the relationships he’s built with his teammates.

For Shaffer, football starts with something bigger than the game itself.

“Jesus inspires me as he was the perfect man with the most courage due to his ultimate sacrifice,” he said.

That faith has helped him navigate one of the most demanding positions on the field. Quarterbacks are expected to process coverages, anticipate pressure and make the right read in only a matter of seconds.

“The most difficult thing would be trying to think and read everything about the defense within a short time,” Shaffer said.

It’s a challenge he has embraced over the years, but he believes success is never built by one player alone. The culture inside the Hilldale locker room has become one of his favorite parts of the program.

“The brotherhood and bond we all have, not as teammates but as a family,” Shaffer said. “When we play, we play for each other.”

That family atmosphere has been strengthened by friendships that stretch back long before high school. One teammate, in particular, has played a major role in pushing Shaffer to improve.

“We compete and push each other in the weight room and on the field since we were in the first grade,” Shaffer said of Maxx Frost.

Shaffer still remembers the first time he experienced Friday night football at the varsity level. As a freshman, the atmosphere immediately left an impression.

“The craziest thing I’ve seen was playing my first varsity game freshman year and seeing the amount of fans in the stands,” he said.

Later that season came another milestone that remains his favorite football memory.

“My favorite memory was throwing my first varsity touchdown against Broken Bow my freshman year,” Shaffer said.

Away from football, Shaffer enjoys spending time with friends, often playing golf or pickleball before heading to Lopez, his favorite restaurant in town.

Shaffer has also made a point to invest in younger athletes. He regularly helps with youth football teams, coaching kids and sharing what he has learned throughout his own journey.

“I help with the youth football teams a lot and have helped coach some of the kids growing up,” he said.

With four years of varsity experience behind him, Shaffer enters his senior season understanding that leadership isn’t measured only by statistics. It’s found in preparation, consistency and the willingness to put the team first. Those qualities have defined his career at Hilldale, and they are the ones he hopes leave the biggest impression when his final season comes to an end.
