Hilldale enters the 2026 fastpitch softball season facing a new challenge after graduating six full-time starters from last year’s 19-13 squad. While the Hornets lost a significant amount of experience, longtime head coach Darren Riddle believes this year’s group has the athleticism to remain competitive as it develops throughout the season. Hilldale returns just two full-time starters along with a freshman pitcher who gained valuable experience a year ago, giving the Hornets a foundation to build around despite their youth.
Leading the way is senior Charlee Medley, a four-year starter who provides leadership, versatility and consistency on both sides of the ball. Medley is expected to spend time at shortstop and in the outfield while hitting in the top five of the lineup. Riddle describes her as an outstanding defender capable of saving runs wherever she plays. At the plate, she is a disciplined contact hitter who rarely strikes out, while her unselfish approach and vocal leadership make her one of the program’s cornerstones. She also serves as a leader off the field through FCA and team prayer, setting an example for younger teammates.
Sophomore first baseman Avary Gardner returns after starting every game as a freshman and batting near the top of the order. A left-handed hitter, Gardner brings gap power with home run potential while providing steady defense at first base. Her work ethic has already established her as one of the team’s emerging leaders despite her youth.
Another young player expected to make a major impact is sophomore Makenzie Hannon. After an impressive freshman season in left field, Hannon returns with outstanding athleticism, speed and softball instincts. Her ability to cover ground defensively and put the ball in play consistently gives Hilldale another dependable contributor as the lineup continues to mature.
The Hornets also welcome back freshman pitcher Kallee Smith, who returns after earning starts in the circle last season. With a young roster surrounding several proven returners, Hilldale’s success will depend on how quickly its newcomers adjust to larger roles. If the Hornets develop as expected while their veteran leaders provide stability, they have the pieces to remain a competitive team throughout the fall.
